One-pot syntheses by controlling relative reactivities. Molecules are materials that ultimately have to be synthesized for scrutinizing scientific and technological concepts in all fields of the molecular sciences. Very often this involves tedious multistep syntheses; that is, stepwise reaction sequences requiring numerous isolation and purification steps. However, synthetic chemistry can become significantly more practical if syntheses are done in a one-pot fashion by simply reacting the starting materials in a controlled fashion (Fig. 1).
